yeah, and women aren't oppressed (I'm being sarcastic)
I found this on Cottonjane's journal, http://www.livejournal.com/users/cottonjaneIt's disgusting to me,well, on moral grounds, but also because it reminds me of how people in the church can be so cold-hearted towards women. They don't understand all of the stuff (and this would be an example of some of the stuff) that women must deal with in this world. And churches here (United States) don't want to spend resouces on helping women or investing in women.
Here is an example of some of the "stuff" that women must deal with in this world. To continue: and many churches here treat women as second-class citizens. And then some women start to believe that--that they truely are second-class citizens.

A 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing "sexual services'' at a in Berlin faces possible cuts to her unemployment benefit under laws introduced this year.Prostitution was legalised in Germany just over two years ago and owners – who must pay tax and employee health insurance – were granted access to official databases of jobseekers. The waitress, an unemployed information technology professional, had said that she was willing to work in a bar at night and had worked in a cafe. She received a letter from the job centre telling her that an employer was interested in her "profile'' and that she should ring them. Only on doing so did the woman, who has not been identified for legal reasons, realise that she was calling a . Under Germany's welfare reforms, any woman under 55 who has been out of work for more than a year can be forced to take an available job – including in the industry – or lose her unemployment benefit. Last month German unemployment rose for the 11th consecutive month to 4.5 million, taking the number out of work to its highest since reunification in 1990.The government had considered making s an exception on moral grounds, but decided that it would be too difficult to distinguish them from bars. As a result, job centres must treat employers looking for a in the same way as those looking for a dental nurse. When the waitress looked into suing the job centre, she found out that it had not broken the law. Job centres that refuse to penalise people who turn down a job by cutting their benefits face legal action from the potential employer."There is now nothing in the law to stop women from being sent into the industry," said Merchthild Garweg, a lawyer from Hamburg who specialises in such cases. "The new regulations say that working in the industry is not immoral any more, and so jobs cannot be turned down without a risk to benefits."<

Why is "prostitute" a filtered word ? I don't understand . It's truly a horrible institution , but sadly it does exist .
Avoiding the use of this word does nothing to hurt this demeaning, degrading 'profession.'
This story is horribly disgusting and disturbing . No one should be penalized for refusing to have sex .
Is this story really an example of oppression of women , though ?
I would argue that it is not . What if the person had been a male who turned down a job as a prostitute ? He still would have had his benefits taken away .
You might say that that doesn't happen to men .
Well, what if he had turned down a job at a brothel ?
Again , I am in no way saying that women are not oppressed . I am pointing out that viewing things as a feminist first might be inhibiting your ability to see clearly on issues . Yes , things have historically been worse for women than men , and yes , this is an issue that must be addressed !
But not in the way that I've seen it addressed - by demeaning men at the same time as women are lifted up . Other mistakes of feminists have been to call the life choice of homemaker degrading to women , and encouraging women to try to be as sexually promiscious as men can be . I recommend the book "Return to Modesty" ( Cottonjane loves it )
I am really struggling with this issue. I read in my Bible today, "He is Lord over every ruler and authority in the universe." Colossians 2:10b
How could this be, that God would let this happen, if he is the authority over the universe? That a woman would be forced to sell her body in the "civilized world" (Germany) so she could eat.
And, Mark, I don't think that this new law applies to men. I think it is for women only, and that was why the article was written, though I could be mistaken. If a man can't find a job in Germany, I think he could get unemployment without penalty for not choosing to work as a .
I see your point though; I'm sure that men somewhere have gone into similar industries to have food to eat and a roof over their head. I think that it is mostly women though.
