go into medicine with a pure heart
A couple days ago, one of the patients in the ER was a retired professor from the University. He was asking me a few questions about myself. I said, "I'm a technician, but I want to be a doctor." He replied, "I know," which I thought was interesting because most men his age (80's) would see a female in scrubs and think nurse. Anyway, he then asked me "Why do you want to be a doctor?"I realized it comes down to this. Becoming a doctor has to come from anther motivation b/sides "I want money" or "I want a job" Esp. the popular line in med school interviews of "I want to help people." Oh my gosh, there's so many easier ways to help people (teaching? counseling? nursing, etc.) than the med school route. Only do the med school route if you absolutely have to.
So, I gave the man a few reasons, then I said, "What if you are interested in biology and the way the human body works?" I could tell that this made sense to him, I could practically see the "wheels turning" in his head, and he said, "Oh, that would be a good reason." It seemed to have appeased his question of my motivation. I could tell he was, or had been, a very smart man.
